Councillors mulling summer vacation schedule

Common Council President Daniel Napolitano is proposing that his body have a limited summer vacation this year.

At Monday night’s meeting, Napolitano recommended that the council only meet once during the months of July and August, instead of their usual twice-a-month schedule.

He proposed that the summer meetings be held on Monday, July 23, and Monday, August 20, and that the council resume its regular schedule of two meetings a month in September.

Councillor Catherine Tomassi Hicks immediately registered her opposition to Napolitano’s proposal.

“We’re getting paid to be here, and we should continue our regular schedule,” said Hicks.

However, Councillor Rosa DiFlorio said she believes “everyone deserves a vacation”.

Councillor Wayne Matewsky suggested that the council take a “wait and see” attitude on the vacation issue.

The Ward One councilman said that before the council makes a decision, “we should see what the aldermen are planning to do”.

No vote was taken since the recommended summer vacation schedule technically constitutes a “rule change”, and all proposed rule changes are automatically tabled for one meeting.
