Replenishing funds earmarked for police budget

At the request of the mayor and police chief, the board of aldermen Monday night voted to transfer $20,000 in unused health department funds to replenish certain police department budget accounts that are near depletion with still two weeks to go in the current fiscal year.

The health department had an excess in its salary account.

Police Chief Steve Mazzie told the aldermen that the transferred monies will alleviate a deficit in his department’s clothing allowance line item account ($1,289) and will cover increased costs in data handling ($5,750) and telecommunications ($7,672).

The transfer will also help pay projected “over-runs” in office supplies ($2,500); professional development ($500); equipment ($700); and academy training and travel for four new officers ($1,589).

Chief Mazzie assured the aldermen that the shortages experienced this fiscal year in his budget “won’t be a long-term issue”.

The $20,000 transfer was unanimously approved by the board.

This is great news. I’m glad I live in a city like Everett. They really take care of the important things. Especially when it comes to their Police Department, which I must say is quite exceptional. Their response-time is outstanding, far better as compared to the neighboring town of Malden.

Everett also does not participate in the “PAY AS YOU THROW” trash program that Malden adopted a few years ago. In my opinion, that is the worst program ever. ( Make residents buy a $20 box of trash bags just so they can curtail the town budget and then provide a hap-hazard recycling program on top of that?! ) — Thanks, Malden but No Thanks.

Anyway, back to the lovely city of Everett. Sure it has its ups and downs just like any city but overall I think they really set the bar pretty high and should be recognized as a leading example to all other towns on how to run things.

Nice job Everett. Keep up the good work!
